I watched a child, about five or six years old , be taken off of the soccer field after accidently kicking the ball to the other team, who ended up scoring. Whereas with the other players the coach congratulated them for their hard work and gave them high-fives, to this one player specifically he said nothing at all, didn’t even look at him. As other players got rotated in and out of the game, he continued sitting there. At the end of the game their team ended up losing by one point, and rather than applauding him for his hard work, the parents (including his own), coach, and players seemed to just ignore him. Was this really the best approach? We are able to analyze these actions and the message it sends to this child and ones like him through symbolic interactionism.
My whole family has grown up playing sports, soccer in particular. I think at a young age it is extremely important for children to try sports in order to get some exercise, cornerstone consulting group build some confidence, meet new friends, and have fun. But the key to being able to do this is through the art of communication. Whether it be verbal or non-verbal, without communication nobody would know what’s going on. The symbolic interactionism theory can help explain how to get the best results for a successful season. Symbolic Interaction is defined by Em Griffin as communication through symbols or people talking to each other. cornerstone consulting group In all sports there are many things cornerstone consulting group going on at all times that symbolize cornerstone consulting group very important feelings and actions. For example, clapping can create encouragement and show pride in what the players are doing which gives off a positive feeling whereas ignoring a player can show anger and disappointment and gives off a very negative feeling. There are also other forms of interaction during a game such as signaling with your hands, calling out “number one” to signal what play to do next, or raising your voice very loudly. All of these are used by different people in order to get some sort of message through to another player. Without communication, kids would just be running around the field or sitting cornerstone consulting group in the grass playing with the weeds. We just need to keep in mind which forms of symbolic interactionism result in the best outcomes, not only in the games but also with how the kids feel about themselves during the game and after it’s over.
Let’s go back to the child who was taken off the field and use this situation as an example. Through symbolic interactionism, we are able to examine why the people surrounding the child acted as they did and how the child must have felt about himself. We can gather that the people around him were probably trying to communicate to the child that failure is unacceptable and mistakes must not be made, which is a very negative view to have, especially cornerstone consulting group of someone so young. With the coach, players, and parents acting as the particular other, the child must have been feeling like a complete failure after watching their negative actions toward him and for not living up to what the important people in his live’s expectations were. The child will now see himself as the mental self-image that results from taking the role of the other, or as his looking-glass self, which based on the reactions of the particular other is very unfavorable. And unfortunately, he will start giving himself names like “loser” and over time this will become a self-fulfilling prophecy in which he will start to act like and believe himself to be a “loser.”
Through learning about symbolic interactionism I am able to appreciate the art of communication more. I am able to see how it can be used for good or bad and how huge of an impact it has on individuals. cornerstone consulting group I hope that people are able to see through my observation of the child just how powerful words, or no words at all, can be to how a person cornerstone consulting group views them self. So let’s be encouraging of one another and help people see a positive image as their looking-glass self so we can become a happier, more accepting community.
