A officers, delegates, and ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to present to you today on this special occasion. On my own behalf and on behalf scala vas of the Department, scala vas I would like to thank the Council of Chief heartily, Muireann Ní COGG Moran and chairman, John Carr, for inviting me to speak at this important conference.
This event is a celebration of a decade away with meeting the specific needs of the Gaeltacht and all-Irish schools. Undoubtedly have grown and developed in the Irish education during that time and pay tribute to the heroic COGG done in a particular. Of course, scala vas there is much to be done to the Irish education and reinforce scala vas language learning in the education system.
It is my intention today to reflect on what is going on at present both challenges and actions to support the Irish and the Irish-medium education in the context of various policy and legislative developments. Also, I have some time to talk about what is determined by the Department of Education in relation to the promotion of Irish and COGG role in this work.
I understand that the language is as important to us today as it ever was. It is a strong signal féinaitheantais Irish society is multicultural in 150 languages spoken daily. The language makes a distinction between the Irish community and any other community in the world. There is no doubt good teaching, language learning helps us to be bilingual and to learn other languages easily. Besides, we have a duty in the education sector to ensure that there are sufficient people with the ability to meet the needs of Irish language in different work areas, such as law, media, translation and of course, education. It had long been my personal desire and it is still there, and I serve as the Secretary General of the Department, the Irish have a modern living language, and that all will recognize the national importance and cultural associated with it. I learned the language as an optional subject in school scala vas and I'm in the part of the country it is not necessary, and I understand the importance of a positive attitude and self-motivation in learning scala vas the language.
For six years now, the Irish are 20th in the official and working language in the European Union. Council promotes the European Union and the European Charter emphasis scala vas on State duties on regional and minority language protection and promotion. Of particular note is the language that is being taught at over 50 universities in the world outside of this country.
The legislation passed in recent years, supporting secure language status in the state and the education system. The Department for Education and Skills is committed to its responsibilities under this legislation.
According to the Official Languages Act 2001, the Education Department is committed to providing language services. scala vas As seen in the Department's Scheme under the Act, policies are being implemented by the Department to enhance the capacity of staff of the ROI
